Ognjen Popović

Ognjen Popović was born in 1977 in Pančevo, where he completed elementary and secondary music school. He continued his studies in Stuttgart. He graduated and received his master’s degree from the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in the class of prof. Ulf Rodenhäuser.

Popović has given concerts all over the world as a soloist and member of chamber ensembles. As a soloist, he has performed with the Munich Philharmonic, the European Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Orchestra of Valencia, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the RTS Symphony Orchestra, the Strings of St. George and others. As an orchestral musician, he has collaborated with the Stuttgart State Opera Orchestra, the German Chamber Academy from Neuss, the Passau Symphony Orchestra, and the Maribor Festival Orchestra. He won awards at the Felix Mendelssohn Competitions in Berlin in 1998 and the International Music Youth Competition in Belgrade in 1997.

Since 2002, Popović has been the principal clarinetist of the Belgrade Philharmonic, and in the same year he founded the chamber ensemble Balkan Chamber Academy. With the famous German chamber ensemble Villa Musica, he has given a number of concerts in Germany and Spain and has recorded CDs with works by R. Strauss and A. Ponchielli.

He has performed and made recordings of his original music, first with the band “Ognjen and Friends” (4 CDs), and then with the Ognjen Popović Band (1 CD). In 2010, the renowned publishing house Genuine from Leipzig, Germany, published his CD in collaboration with pianist Mirjana Rajić. Famous composers Stanojlo Rajičić, Dejan Despić and Ante Grgin dedicated some of their works to him.

Popović is the artistic director of the Chamber Music Festival “Classic Fest” in Pančevo. He has held master classes in Germany, Spain, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Serbia. Since 2015 he has held the international clarinet workshop “Deliblatska peščara – Čardak”. He was also engaged as a visiting assistant professor at the “Villa Musica” Chamber Music Academy in Mainz, Germany. Since 2010, he has been teaching clarinet at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. In 2012, he received his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Music (FMU) in Belgrade. Since 2015 his compositions have been published by the German publishing house Edition Diewa Verlag, Munich.
