The Varaždin School of Music secured significant support from ministry for the International Piano Competition projects – Jurica Murai Memorial & Murai Grand Prix

At the close of an exceptionally successful calendar year, the Varaždin School of Music proudly shares excellent news, the Varaždin School of Music has been awarded EUR 7,000 in support from the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia for the organization of the International Piano Competition – Memorijal Jurica Murai & Murai Grand Prix, within the framework of the Public Call for Proposals for Public Needs in Culture. This prestigious competition, bearing the name of the distinguished Croatian pianist and academician Jurica Murai, will hold its 7th edition in the spring of 2026.
Over the years, the competition has developed into a relevant international platform for the affirmation of young pianists up to the age of 32, encompassing a crucial developmental stage from formal education to the early professional career. It offers participants the opportunity to perform before an international expert jury, exchange experiences, and engage with contemporary interpretative trends, thereby fostering their artistic and professional growth.
A particular value of the competition lies in the systematic performance of works by Croatian composers—from classical to contemporary authors—actively contributing to the preservation, promotion, and modern reinterpretation of Croatia’s musical heritage. In this way, the competition not only supports the emergence of young performers but also strengthens cultural identity and the sustainability of Croatian music within the European and international context.
