International Piano Competition – Memorijal Jurica Murai and Murai Grand Prix will be held from April 18th – April 23rd 2024. The applications for the Competition will be open until March 15th 2024.
RULES AND CATEGORIES
Memorijal Jurica Murai (Tribute to Jurica Murai) is intended for young pianists up to 19 years old.
Murai Grand Prix is a competition intended for pianists, 17 – 32 year-old artists.
Memorijal Jurica Murai (Tribute to Jurica Murai)
The participants compete in six categories determined according to their age on the day of the competition, April 18th 2024.
Category A: 9 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 5 minutes
One piece from the baroque era is mandatory for Categories from B to F.
Category B: 11 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 8 minutes
Category C: 13 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 10 minutes
Category D: 15 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 15 minutes
Category E: 17 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 20 minutes
Category F: 19 years and under – free choice repertoire which may not exceed 25 minutes
A candidate can compete with different programmes in two categories, the one of the same age or with older candidates.
The complete repertoire must be performed from memory.
Prizes will be awarded by the Jury in each category:
• 1st Prize – to all participants who score 95 – 100 points
• 2nd Prize – to all participants who score 90 – 94.99 points
• 3rd Prize – to all participants who score 85 – 89.99 points
Several special prizes can also be awarded by the Jury, a special prize for the best performance of works by Croatian composers and a special prize for the best performance of works by female composers.
All participants who score up to 85 points will receive a participation certificate.
The category A laureate will receive a special price from the Organiser of the Competition.
The category B laureate will recive a € 120 cash prize.
The category C laureate will recive a € 140 cash prize.
The category D laureate will recive a € 160 cash prize.
The category E laureate will recive a € 180 cash prize.
The category F laureate will recive a € 200 cash prize.
The prizes may not be shared.
Grand Prix Murai
The participants compete in the unique category. The competitors’ age (17 – 32) is determined according to their age on the day of the competition, April 18th 2024.
The Competition will consist of two rounds.
1st Round – duration up to 15 minutes
J. S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue from WTK or one Toccata (BWV 910 – 916) or Fantasia and Fugue.
Virtuoso etude by F. Chopin, F. Liszt, S. Rahmanjinov, A. Skrjabin or C. Debussy
The rest of the repertoire is of free choice.
2nd Round – duration up to 30 minutes
L. van Beethoven: the 1st movement of one of the sonatas (except op. 49 and op. 79) or Variations.
The rest of the repertoire is of free choice.
The complete repertoire must be performed from memory.
Prizes: three prizes, which may not be shared, will be awarded by the Jury.
- 1st Prize – a cash award of € 2000
- 2nd Prize – a cash award of € 1000
- 3rd Prize – a cash award of € 700
The candidates that win unanimous Jury votes, can pass into the 2nd Round. In the 2nd Round the Jury ranks the candidates by place. All candidates of 2nd Round will be given the Certificate of participation in the Competition Finals.
The official end of the competition is the Final concert, where all the laureates of the Grand Prix Murai competition and the participants of Memorijal Jurica Murai (Tribute to Jurica Murai) selected by the Jury, are obliged to perform. Otherwise, they lose the right to be awarded.
Article 1
The International Competitions of Varaždin School of Music are intended for musicians, regardless of their type of education and nationality.
Article 2
The competitions are open to the public.
Article 3
The Organiser (the School) shall retain all the rights to video and audio recordings.
Article 4
The competitions will be held in alphabetical order starting with the letter “A”.
Article 5
Participants are required to register at the Competition Office by presenting an identifying document (identity card or passport) not later than an hour before their performance.
Article 6
Participants are permitted to make changes to the repertoire indicated in the application form, except for the required work if prescribed in the common rules, until the day of the Competition.
Article 7
Every participant will receive his/her rehearsal time prior to the performance, as well as a short acoustic rehearsal in the hall where the competition will take place.
Article 8
The jury will be composed of renowned Croatian and foreign musicians and pedagogues.
Article 9
In case of withdrawal of a member of the jury, the Organiser has the right to replace the withdrawing member with a new member.
Article 10
If a member of the Jury is a participant’s teacher or is related to him/her, such a member shall abstain from voting. They will perform their duty professionaly and in any case won’t influence the decision and scoring of other Jury members.
Article 11
In case of withdrawal from the competition, the paid registration fee is not refunded to the competitors. Refund of the registration fee is possible only in case of cancellation of the competiton by the organizer.
Article 12
Participants do not have to perform for the maximum duration specified for the given category. The Jury has the right to stop the participant’s performance if it exceeds the time limit, which does not disqualify the participant from the voting procedure.
Article 13
Secretaries of the Jury by each category measure the performance of the participants and warn the Jury about the possibility of exceeding the allowed time of the performance.
Article 14
By registering for the competition, participants give the Organizer permission to use their personal information in all submitted documents solely for the purpose of the Competition.
Article 15
The Organiser shall retain all the rights to video and audio recordings for all the events in the competition halls. All other forms of recording constitute a violation of the provisions of these Regulations.
Article 16
The competition schedule regarding different disciplines and categories will be published on the Competition web site and will be printed out in the Competition booklet so that the participants can receive the information in a timely manner. Only Name, Surname and the State of Origin of the participants will be printed in the Comeptition booklet and the score sheet. On the Certificate all information will be printed: Name and Surname, Institution, State of Origin and Scores.
Article 17
A special prize to the most successful pedagogue can be awarded by the Jury at its discretion.
Article 18
The decisions made by the Jury are final and non-appealable.
Article 19
The competitor or the representatives of the competitors are obliged to receive the prize at the award ceremony. The final results are announced after the award ceremony. The unclaimed diplomas and awards are retained by the Organizer and shall not be sent by post.
Article 20
The Varaždin School of Music, as the Organiser, reserves the right to amend the Competition Rules.
Article 21
In case of doubt, the Croatian version of the Competition Rules shall have precedence.
