Christos Papageorgiou
Christos Papageorgiou’s wider acclaim in his country came after he began producing Classical Music Programs for Radio and TV. He is currently composing music for various ensembles, playing solo, conducting, lecturing, teaching as well as producing TV and Radio programs.
Between June 2014-15 he was the Director of the National Classical Radio 3 (Trito Programma) following his next appointments as “Counsellor to the President and Managing Director of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation ERT on Music and Cultural issues”, Artist in Residence and TV & Radio producer. His music was chosen for the Gala Concert for the 70 th anniversary of the Athens State Orchestra, and for a 2013 Adventurous Programming Award for the Buffalo Philharmonic along with Giya Kancheli and Paul Dougherty.
In 2015 on a televised anniversary concert Christos Papageorgiou performed and conducted Prokofieff’s 3rd Piano Concerto from the piano, 85 years after Dimitris Mitropoulos had done so in Berlin, being the fourth person who attempted it after Prokofieff and Van Kliburn.
As soloist, conductor, and composer he has collaborated with orchestras such as the: Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchester Symphonique du Capitole de Toulouse, Czech Radio Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Muenchen Sinfoniker, Orquestra Sinfonica “Ciudad de Malaga”, NHK Danyu Orchestra(Japan), Odessa Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica-del Emilia Romagna-“ArturoToscanini”, Oxford Philomusica, New England Symphonic Ensemble, Athens State Orchestra, Hellenic Radio Sympony and Modern Radio Sympony, Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Istanbul State Orchestra Izmir State Orchestra Hellenic National Radio Symphony, Camerata of the friends of Music, Orchester Symphonique de Neuchatel, Odessa Chamber Orchestra, OpavaChamber Orchestra, Patras Chamber Orchestra, Volos Symphony Orchestra and many others. He has collaborated with distinguished solo musicians and ensembles such as, NYPhil. Chamber Soloists, contralto Maria Farandouri, guitarist Oscar Ghiglia, saxophonist Theodore Kerkezos, and conductors Michel Plasson, Phillipe Entremont, Pedro Calderon, Hobart Earle, in important venues such as: Berlin Philharmonie, Barbican Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie (Weil) Hall, Wigmore Hall, Queen Elisabeth Hall, Kensington Palace, St.James Palace, Casals Hall – Kioi Hall – Kodaira Hall(Tokyo), Rudolfinum Dvorakhall, Basler Konzerthaus, BernKulturkasino, Athens Megaron, Thessaloniki Megaron, et.c. He has recorded for BBC, RAI, ARD, Suisse Radio, Berlin Radio 3, among others.
Christos Papageorgiou has obtained titles and diplomas in all fields of his activities (piano, composition, conducting, teaching), with honors and distinctions from the Royal Academy of Music in London (with full scholarship and “LeverhumeTrust Fellowship”), University of London, Thames Valley University, and the Athens State Conservatory. He is a recipient of the Onassis Foundation scholarship, among many others.
Since September 2019 Christos Papageorgiou presents the weekly cultural promo TV show “Stathmos Megaron” (former “OMMA at-the-ARTS”) while continuing his established Radio program. He gives numerous lectures and concerts (many times both as soloist and conductor). He had also been teaching music history and piano at the Ionian University in Corfu and the National School of Dance, and has lectured in many Institutions around Greece and abroad, such as the Wiener Gesselschaft fur Music, Lucern Conesrvatory, the Mass Media Department of the Athens University, the Postgraduate Department of the School of Architecture of Volos University, etc.
He has received many distinctions fotr his compositions, including First Prize at the ‘5th International Competition for Composition “2 Agosto’ (Italy) for his ‘Concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra’. He has also received many First prizes and distinctions in five International Piano Duo Competitions in the USA, Japan, Italy, Czech Republic and Switzerland. He was the recipient of the „Young Artist of the Year “award for 1998 by the „National Society of Critics for music and drama”.
He was also a special guest artist at Unicef’s 50 th Anniversary concert in Chicago with Nana Mouschouri and Harry Belafonte. Since September 2015 Christos Papageorgiou is the Artistic Director of the National Conservatory (Etnikon Odeion) in Kifissia.
